Rice Pej (Konkan Rice Porridge)

A comforting and simple coastal dish — rice cooked until soft and soupy, eaten plain or with accompaniments like pickle, chutney, or dry fish.

Ingredients (Serves 3–4)

  • ½ cup raw rice (preferably boiled rice/ukda chawal)

  • 3–4 cups water

  • Salt to taste


Method

  1. Wash rice thoroughly and place in a deep pot.

  2. Add water and bring to a boil.

  3. Lower flame and simmer until rice grains are soft and start breaking.

  4. Add salt to taste.

  5. Serve hot or warm.


Pro Tips

  • For richer taste, cook in a clay pot.

  • Add a spoon of ghee before serving for extra aroma.


Serving Suggestion

Enjoy with mango pickle, dry shrimp chutney, or fried fish on the side.
