Crab Masala

Updated: Aug 11, 2025

A coastal delicacy — fresh crabs cooked in a thick, aromatic Malwani-style masala.

Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 6–8 medium crabs, cleaned and cracked

  • 2 medium onions, chopped

  • 1 cup grated coconut

  • 2 tbsp Malwani masala powder

  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

  • 4–5 dried red chilies

  • 2 tsp coriander seeds

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 2 tbsp oil

  • Salt to taste

  • Fresh coriander for garnish

Method

  1. Roast coconut, coriander seeds, cumin, and red chilies until coconut is golden. Cool and grind into a fine paste.

  2. Heat oil in a kadhai, add chopped onions and fry until golden.

  3. Add turmeric, Malwani masala powder, and fry for 2 mins.

  4. Add ground coconut paste, cook until oil separates.

  5. Add cleaned crabs and salt. Stir well.

  6. Add 1½ cups water, cover, and simmer for 10–12 mins until crabs are cooked.

Pro Tips

  • Do not overcook crabs — they will turn rubbery.

  • Slightly crack crab claws before cooking to allow masala to seep in.

Serving Suggestion

Serve with plain steamed rice and a wedge of lemon.
